Coffeyville Swept by Cowley

The Coffeyville Red Ravens took two more losses to Cowley County Saturday, dropping both contests by final scores 2-1 and 11-5.

The first contest seemed to be a direct continuation of the Red Ravens' two losses to Cowley on Thursday. Coffeyville's Christopher Spry and Cowley's Aaron Weber started out strong, although the Tigers did score the game's first run in the 2nd inning after a costly two-out error by Coffeyville. That was it scoring-wise until the bottom of the 5th, with the Red Ravens tying things up on an RBI bunt single by Austin Gonzales. Unfortunately, the Tigers would get through Spry one last time in the top of the 7th, and with Coffeyville unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning, the Ravens suffered its second straight 1-run loss at 2-1.

Game 2 seemed like it'd be another pitcher's battle, with Cowley leading 3-1 after 4 innings. That status quo was maintained until the game's final inning, when Cowley exploded for 8 runs off of Raven relievers Camden Gipson and Korben Ford. Now leading 11-1, it seemed like Cowley would cruise to a double-digit victory. That just wasn't to be. Coffeyville responded with 4 runs immediately themselves in the bottom of the 9th, including a 2-RBI triple by Quentin Platt that added 3 after Platt himself was able to score on an overthrow.  That would add at least a little bit of intrigue to the game; however, the momentum would stall out there, as Cowley took the series sweep 11-5.

Coffeyville is now 13-11 this season, 5-7 in Jayhawk Conference play. They'll travel to Kansas City next Thursday for a matchup with the KCK Community College Blue Devils.
