Ravens See Season Ended by Garden City

Coffeyville's basketball season officially came to a close Tuesday night, as the men's team fell 84-67 to Garden City in the second round of the Region VI tournament.

After falling behind to begin the game, Coffeyville seemed to have things figured out. The Broncbusters attempted pressure was easily broken, and as the Ravens shot 50% from the field in the first half, they found themselves able to build a fairly nice lead. However, that offensive success came with a price back on defense, with several key players such as Love Bettis and Deng Mayar racking up fouls. Despite this, strong play from bench players such as Noah Butler and Jules Bikoy helped Coffeyville take a 40-34 lead into the locker rooms.

As was often the case in the last few games of the season, Coffeyville took a bit of a step back in the second half. With Garden City still adding tons of pressure, the Ravens began to fold more and more often, leading to more and more fouls and points at the line. The Broncbusters shot 35 free throws Tuesday, making 23. With the free points coming through, Garden City didn't necessarily have to make shots from the field to generate points. That added more problems onto the difficulties Coffeyville was facing, with the offense beginning to miss shots that had previously fallen. The 6-point halftime lead quickly dissipated, and after a little bit of time spent trading the lead back and forth, Garden City began to pull away.

Ultimately, Coffeyville was unable to stop the bleeding, with the lead growing to as much as 19 before settling at 17 for the final score. The Ravens were outscored 50-27 in the decisive half. Bettis battled through foul trouble to reach double-digits in his final game as a Red Raven, scoring 16. AJ McBride added 10. The Ravens finish their campaign at 18-13. Garden City advances to the Region VI semifinals, where they will face #1-seed Dodge City.
