Simpson Comes Through to Lift Ravens Over Seward

Some clutch play in the closing minute helped lift the Coffeyville Red Ravens over the Seward Saints, 63-60, on Saturday.

Coffeyville jumped out to a big lead early, opening the game on a 10-0 run. However, despite holding off the Saints for most of the night, would not really reach the heights of a double-digit lead after that point. Despite that, the Ravens still were able to get a solid offensive output from leading scorer Faith Simpson. When she got into foul trouble early in the second quarter, it was Nakia Cullom who stepped in to take charge, scoring all 8 of her points in the half. At the break, Coffeyville led 32-25.

The game's final 30 seconds brought the most fun. With 12 seconds remaining, and the Ravens leading at 59-57, the Saints' De'Shawnti drilled a three-pointer from the corner to give Seward a 60-59 advantage. Coffeyville took a timeout, and after inbounding from the half-court, got Simpson in a 1-on-1 situation on the block. The sophomore made good on her chance, putting it on off the right side of the glass for a 61-60 lead. A defensive stop, another Simpson bucket, and a failed 30-footer would all follow, giving Coffeyville the narrow victory.

Simpson led all scorers with 19, the only Red Raven to reach double-digits. Coffeyville has won two straight and will take on Pratt next Monday.
