West Elk Outlasts Short-Handed Argonia

The West Elk girls withstood a brave effort from the Argonia Lady Raiders on Friday, coming through with a 48-39 victory.

Playing as the only contest of the evening due to the prior cancelation of the boys' game, the girls did not disappoint. The two teams were evenly matched for the entirity of the first half, with the Patriots taking a slight edge at 17-16 at the break.

The Lady Raiders, playing with only 5 on their roster as they have all season, seemed to run out of gas in the third quarter. Meanwhile, West Elk's Hannah Whetstone took over the Patriots' offense, getting good looks inside and dominating the paint. Whetstone scored 12 points herself in the quarter, giving West Elk the decisive edge.

Argonia was able to put up a bit more of a fight in the fourth quarter, with Chelsea Coleman providing most of the scoring effort. Trailing by as many as 14, the Raiders' full-court press would provide enough of a bump to bring it back to within single digits. However, with West Elk able to find a steady trickle of points themselves, the swing wasn't enough to completely threaten the Patriots' prior efforts. The final score eventually came in at 48-39.

Whetsone's huge third quarter contributed to her 19 points overall, but Argonia's Chelsea Coleman led all scorers with 20. Stay tuned to kggfradio.com for more information regarding upcoming Game of the Week broadcasts.
