West Elk and Cedar Vale-Dexter Split Games

West Elk and Cedar Vale-Dexter each took one win in their doubleheader Tuesday, with the Patriot girls victorious 57-24 while the Spartan boys took the following contest 39-37.

The boys’ matchup saw two teams looking to continue their winning ways. West Elk carried a 5-game winning streak into the ballgame. Cedar Vale-Dexter jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but West Elk would slowly make their way back into things with a patient offense that ran significant amounts of time off the clock. That, of course, led to a low-scoring first half. The Spartans led at the break, 21-19.

Despite leading the entire way, things weren’t necessarily easy for the Spartans in the second half. The Patriots remained aggressive on defense and forced CVD into several turnovers, turnovers that occasionally led to points. However, West Elk struggled to score when it mattered most. That trend continued right down to the final play. With 11.7 seconds to go, the Patriots missed three chances inside, any of which would have tied the ballgame. A foul and a missed free throw back the other way gave West Elk one final chance, but Wesley Young’s full court heave fell well short, giving the Spartans a 39-37 victory.

Freshman Maddex Moreno led the Patriots in scoring with 15 points. CVD was led by Fernando Alen Garcia, who had 13. West Elk is now 11-5 this season, while the Spartans improve to 11-2.

---------------

After a few minutes of scoreless action, the West Elk girls took complete control of their matchup. Using their height advantage, the Patriots found themselves several opportunities for second chance points. After jumping out to a 19-2 lead after just one quarter, the home team further increased that lead to 29-7 at the break.

The Spartans nearly doubled their points total in the third quarter, but despite the improvement, it was much too little, much too late. West Elk’s continued dominance inside kept the deficit above 20 points, eventually growing to a final of 57-24.

The Patriots were led in scoring by Hannah Whetstone, who had 16. Josie Ware added 13, and Molly McClendon added 10. Riley Schalk led the Spartans offense with 12, 11 of which came in the third quarter.
