Raven Men Impressive in Upset Win Over Hutchinson

The Red Raven men defeated its first ranked opponent of the season Saturday, overcoming 13th-ranked Hutchinson 87-71 on the road.

For the first time since capturing the NJCAA National Championship, the Red Ravens entered the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Although the first half was a low-scoring battle, the action did not quite fit that descriptor. Hutchinson, coached by former Cowley boss Tommy DeSalme, looked to press at every opportunity. Coffeyville responded fairly well to that challenge, despite giving up a few more turnovers than average. At the break, the two teams were knotted up at 33 each.

The second half is where Coffeyville truly pulled away. With the pressure not getting to the Ravens the way they'd have liked, Hutchinson went to their three-point shooters to try to create separation. That didn't work as intended, with missed shots creating fast breaks and more opportunites for the Ravens. Coffeyville got open shots, shot over 50 percent in the second half, and left Hutchinson with a comfortable 86-71 victory.

Blaise Keita led the effort inside, scoring 23 points and gathering 11 rebounds for the double-double. Other double-digit scorers included AJ McBride (18), Love Bettis (15), Deng Mayar (12), and Nathan Johnson (11). The Ravens are winners of three straight, winners of seven of their last nine, and now 12-10 on the season. They'll face the Butler Grizzlies on Monday.
