Red Raven Women Avenge Earlier Loss to Butler

The Coffeyville Red Raven women's basketball team avenged their early-season loss against the Butler Grizzlies, winning 65-51 in the rematch Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies defeated Coffeyville 82-51 in the first meeting between the two teams, but with 2 months between that game and Saturday's contest, it wouldn't really mean much. After giving up the game's first few points, the Red Raven women seemed to have much better answers to questions asked on both sides of the ball. Despite that, Butler's talent meant that this would be no blowout, and Coffeyville nursed a slim 35-33 lead at the halftime break.

A quick run to start the second half gave the Ravens the edge, but the Grizzlies never seemed to truly go away. A couple of double-digit leads were wiped away, but after Coffeyville refused to completely let go of their advantage, Butler seemed to slow down in the final few minutes. Trailing by about 8 with 3 minutes to go, Butler chose to neither press nor foul. With the clock winding down, Paige Scott added the exclamation point on the win with a 3-pointer as the clock expired, giving the Ravens its 14-point victory.

Scott led the team in scoring with 15 points. Faith Simpson fell short of a third consecutive double-double, but still turned in an impressive 14, most of which came in the fourth quarter.. The Raven women are now 15-5 on the season, 9-5 in conference play. They'll face Seward County on Monday.
