South Haven and West Elk Split Doubleheader

Two good ballgames went in different directions Friday, as the South Haven girls defeated West Elk 44-33 while the Patriot boys overcame the Cardinals 41-28.

South Haven proved to be a tough test for the Patriot girls. The Cardinals came into the matchup ranked #6 in Class 1A II. Senior Macey Pond scored the first bucket of the game and continued to be the driving force behind the South Haven offense, scoring 14 points across the first two quarters. However, a late run allowed the Patriots to cut a double-digit deficit to just 23-18 by halftime.

That momentum carried into the second half, as West Elk continued to stick close behind, and finally tying the game back up with a minute left to go in the third quarter. The lead would never be theirs, however, as Pond and the Cardinals reignited their offense to help secure a 44-33 South Haven victory.

Pond led South Haven, and all scorers, with 23 points. Molly McClendon led the Patriots with 13, while Hannah Whetstone had 10. The Patriots drop to 5-8 on the season, and South Haven improves to 10-1.

------------

The boys’ game was a two-man battle for the first quarter or so, with West Elk’s Wesley Young and South Haven’s Grady Howell doing all of the damage. Other scorers started to see action in the second, but with both teams remaining patient and sitting back in zone defense, the Patriots would take a slim 20-16 lead at the break.

An even third quarter meant a 5-point lead for West Elk, but the final quarter proved decisive for the Patriots. South Haven was held to just 5 points in the final 8 minutes. With the Cardinals in foul trouble, West Elk was able to pull away for the 41-28 win.

Young led the Patriots in scoring with 18, with freshman Maddex Moreno adding 9. Grady Howell had 11 for the Cardinals. West Elk improves to 9-4 on the season, South Haven drops to 6-8.
