Raven Men See Winning Streak End at Four

The Red Raven men’s basketball team fought hard to the final whistle Wednesday night, but couldn’t overcome the Garden City Broncbusters, 78-74.

Chaos reigned supreme in the first half, as the Broncbusters looked to pressure Coffeyville into several mistakes. Garden City forward Mohamed Diarra caused all kinds of trouble both inside and outside, scoring 17 first half points, including 3 three-pointers. However, a balanced scoring effort from Blaise Keita, Deng Mayar, and Love Bettis would keep things close at the half, 42-39.

Out of the locker rooms, Garden City would heat up from beyond the arc, and with continued pressure started to pull away from the Ravens. Despite that, the lead never reached anything more than 9, with Coffeyville finding a way to get themselves back in it each time.

However, the Ravens couldn’t take the last step they needed to tie the game back up. Although Diarra would be largely contained in the second half, Garden City’s Josh Nwankwo would step up and pick up the pace in his place. A last-gasp, off-balance 3-pointer from Bettis with just 3 seconds left added a bit of intrigue to the finish, but Nwankwo would put the game truly out of reach with two free throws on the ensuing foul. The Ravens unfortunately saw their winning streak ended at 4 games, 78-74.

Five Red Ravens reached double digits, including Keita, who had 20. Bettis had 13, Mayar had 12, and AJ McBride and Jules Bikoy added 10 apiece.

The Red Ravens move onto yet another tough conference matchup Saturday, hitting the road to take on the Dodge City Conquistadors. Pregame will start for the women’s game at 12:30PM on US98.1, KUSN.
