Sedan and West Elk Split Tuesday Night Matchup

Both Sedan and West Elk tasted victory and defeat on the court Tuesday night, as the Patriot girls took the first game of the evening 47-44 while the Blue Devils boys took the nightcap 55-36.

The girls' game was a roller coaster of emotions. Sedan jumped out to an early 14-9 lead after one quarter, thanks largely in part to the effort of leading scorer Landrea Sears, but it was the Patriots who ended up taking a halftime lead at 23-21.

After extending the lead in the 3rd quarter, West Elk allowed Sedan to embark upon an 8-0 run that brought the deficit to just a couple of points. Trailing 41-38, Sedan's Jacie Cummings would provide the first heroic feat of the night, a banked 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining to tie the game back up. A West Elk basket put the Patriots back in front, but Sears immediately responded with another go-ahead 3-pointer to retake the lead 44-43.

However, despite having multiple chances to put the game away, Sedan couldn't seem to keep opposing hands off the basketball. Even further, they couldn't seem to keep the fiesty Patriots from getting to the line after the fact. West Elk's Kodi Harshman and Josie Ware both drew fouls, and sank their free throws to put the Patriots back on top for good at 47-44, taking the win on the road.

Sears led all scorers with 19, but Harshman and Ware led the Patriots with 12 a piece. The Sedan girls fall to 4-2 on the season, while West Elk improves to 3-5.

The boys' game, by comparison, was a lot more subdued. After an early, closely-fought start, the Blue Devils put their foot on the gas and went on a 15-0 run to take a double-digit lead. Despite that, both teams struggled to gather much offense, with West Elk in particular unable to answer an aggressive Sedan defense. At the half, Sedan led by 10, 21-11.

Things picked up offensively in the second half, although the scales were still tipped in favor of Sedan. An even third quarter kept the lead steady, with West Elk even able to bring it back to single digits for a time, but Sedan reignited their press and jumped back out to their largest leads of the game in the closing stretch. The final score was a low-scoring one, but one that Sedan will happily take, 55-36.

Dameion Hatten led all scorers with 26, while West Elk's Garrett Toon led the Patriots with 16. Sedan improves to 6-1 on the season, while West Elk drops to 5-3.
