Year in Review: Sedan Football Makes Postseason Run

For our final Year in Review for 2021, we'll visit the the Sedan Blue Devils football team, and their quarterfinals postseason run.

For the second straight year, the Sedan Blue Devils looked to be unstoppable through the regular season. Victories of 50-plus points over St. Paul, Flinthills, and Central Burden established Sedan early on as one of the best 8-man teams in southeastern Kansas.

The wins kept on coming, with a 72-22 victory over rival West Elk and shutouts of Cedar Vale-Dexter and Marmaton Valley being just a couple highlights of the campaign. With the latter victory, the Blue Devils secured their second straight undefeated regular season at 8-0.

Sedan earned the #1 seed in District 1 for the 8-man Division I playoffs, and faced a familiar foe in Flinthills in the opening round. Despite an early points-scoring shootout that saw the Blue Devils trailing for the first time in a very long time, the offense soon kicked into high gear. Led by players such as Brec Long, Damieon Hatten, and Jeremiah Prince, among several others, Sedan rolled into the second round with a 74-24 victory.

The second round saw another familiar foe, but one from the previous year's playoffs. The Chase County Bulldogs were the #2 seed in District 2, and had beaten the Blue Devils the year prior. Sedan trailed early in the contest, but took a decisive lead just before the half on this Long-to-Prince connection. Sedan would hold on to win 34-26 and advance to the state quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, the road would stop there, as a strong Canton-Galva squad sent Sedan back home after a 52-6 beatdown. However, the Blue Devils could take pride in a 10-1 overall record and pulling off the team's longest postseason run in quite some time.

That'll be it for 2021's Year in Review. If you missed any of the others, make sure to check them out by visiting our sports page here.
