Year in Review: Coffeyville Football Upsets #1 Hutchinson

Following a trailblazing spring football season, things got back to somewhat-normal with 2021's fall collegiate campaign. For today's Year in Review, we'll take a look at the Coffeyville Red Ravens and the team's upset over defending national champion Hutchinson.

To start off their fall season, Coffeyville was scheduled to face a tough opener against Hutchinson. The Ravens picked up a 3-3 record in the spring, picking up wins over Butler, Highland and Dodge City. Meanwhile, the Blue Dragons were ranked #1 in the preseason NJCAA poll and had just defeated Snow College for a national championship earlier that year. Coffeyville was the consensus underdog, and had lost to Hutchinson 33-10 just a few months prior.

Things got off to a rough start for CCC, as a first-drive fumble led to a Hutchinson touchdown. However, as those in attendance would soon find out, that'd be the only time the Dragons found the endzone all day. After a Forrest Taylor field goal cut the lead to 4, the Red Ravens found the endzone for the first time on its last offensive play of the half. Coffeyville led at the break, 10-7.

Defense and special teams continued to shine in the second half, with Coffeyville adding its second touchdown of the day on a blocked punt. Over the course of the game, the Ravens forced Hutchinson into eight turnovers, including five fumbles, two interceptions, and the blocked punt.  Hutchinson did add three points on a field goal early in the fourth quarter, but the endzone continued to be just a pipe dream for an offense that returned several starters from the year prior. Coffeyville continued to hang on until the end of the game, securing a massive 17-10 upset to begin its fall 2021 season.

Coffeyville would go on to secure the regular season championship, while Hutchinson would go on to eventually win the Jayhawk Conference playoffs and narrowly miss out on a chance to defend its national championship.

We'll move on to high school football for our final Year in Review, as we take a look back at Sedan's second straight undefeated regular season and subsequent quarterfinals run.
