West Elk Wins Two Over Oswego to Begin Season

The West Elk Patriots opened up their basketball season in style, taking both the girls (38-23) and boys (64-22) contests against Oswego in our first Game of the Week on Friday.

West Elk led the entirety of the boys game. Coming out of the gate, it was clear that the Patriots would attempt use their size advantage to dominate inside the paint. Seniors Garrett Toon and Wesley Young were an effective one-two combination, crashing the boards and finding many opportunities for second chance points. The Patriots led 16-0 after the first, 40-11 at the half, and 56-20 in the third quarter. Running clock would end the game a little early, with West Elk claiming its first victory with a final score of 64-22.

Meanwhile, in the preceding girls' game, the Patriots overcame a 10-7 first quarter and 17-15 halftime deficit to overcome the Indians, 38-23. Molly McClendon led all scorers with 13, including 3 triples, while Natalie Harshman and Makaila Gillespie added 7 each toward the comeback effort. Oswego was led by Mae Albertson, who had 10.
