Coffeyville Women Defeat Colby in Triple Overtime

The Coffeyville women's basketball team needed four quarters and three overtime periods, but still got the 82-78 win against Colby on Saturday.

The Ravens, as they have done a few times this season, fell behind early on. After being outscored 18-15 in the the first quarter, Coffeyville only put up 4 points in the second quarter, failing to make a single basket in the process despite solid shot selection. Trailing 32-19 at the half, another comeback was needed. It started out modest, with Coffeyville pulling back to within single-digits and trimming the Trojan lead to just 6 entering the final quarter, and finally tying things back up at 60 with just a minute to go. Neither team was able to convert its final attempt at ending things in regulation, sending Coffeyville to its second overtime game in a row.

The first two overtime periods came and went, with neither side able to get an advantage. However, foul trouble started to dog some of Colby's key players, while Coffeyville was able to mostly keep theirs spread out. With free throws again becoming more and more important, it was the Ravens who were finally able to pull away in the third overtime period. Nakia Cullom scored 8 of her 14 points in the decisive period, while Faith Simpson added several points from the free throw line. A Colby triple to trim the lead to 4 would make things interesting, but the Ravens ran out the rest of the clock for the 82-78 victory.

Simpson led the way in scoring, picking up 22 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Scott recorded a season high 21 points. The Raven women are now 9-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. A tough matchup awaits both the Raven men and women Wednesday, as they'll travel to El Dorado to take on the Butler Grizzlies. Pregame starts at 5 PM, with tip-off at 5:30 PM on US98.1, KUSN.
