Sedan Advances to Second Round

The Sedan Blue Devils overcame a rocky start on defense Thursday, defeating Flinthills 74-24 to advance to the second round of the 8-Man Division I playoffs.

The first quarter alone saw 52 total points. The Mustangs opened up the scoring with a quick, one-play drive that started deep in Sedan territory. However, Dameion Hatten then took the ensuing kickoff back 62 yards for Sedan's opening touchdown. After Flinthills answered that score with one of their own, Sedan's Levi Dowell took the very next kickoff another 60 yards to keep the game within 2 points. After the two teams traded another couple of touchdowns, the score favored Flinthills at 24-22. That would be the last Mustangs lead. Sedan turned on the jets, scoring 30 consecutive points before the half.

After the halftime break, Sedan added to that total, scoring two more touchdowns in the first three minutes of the half. Now leading by 44 and needing just 1 more point to force the mercy rule, the Sedan special teams unit ended the contest with authority. A muffed kickoff and forced fumble led to a mad dash toward the endzone, with Hatten eventually scooping up the loose football for the 74-24 victory.

The Blue Devils (9-0) will face a tough test next Friday. They'll play at home against District 2 #2 Chase County. The Bulldogs defeated District 1 #3 Yates Center 54-0 in the first round.

In other action, league rival West Elk (8-1) advanced to the second round, defeating Central Burden 46-24. In non-bracket play, Oswego dropped their Week 9 matchup to Oxford, 44-21. The Indians close out their season at 3-6.
