Fredonia Falls Just Short in Loss to Humboldt

A strong start wasn't enough to land Fredonia in the win column, as the Yellowjackets dropped a close contest to Humboldt, 28-26.

Both teams entered the contest looking to pick up their first win of the season, and from the get-go, it seemed Fredonia wanted it more. Running back Colten Dinkel started off the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run up the left sideline midway through the first quarter, and was followed by quarterback Joel Dutton's 1-yarder early in the second. Humboldt would eventually answer, with their own quarterback Gavin Page finding the endzone on a 7-yard carry. However, Fredonia would pick up another touchdown just before the half, a 10-yard scamper from Dinkel that gave the Yellowjackets a 12-point lead at 20-8.

Out of the locker rooms, though, it became clear that Humboldt had finally found the answer to Fredonia's defense. A combination of Page and running back Trey Sommer marched down the field early in the third quarter for a quick score. After the rest of the quarter came and went, the Cubs took their first lead of the game in the fourth at 22-20 after Page found the endzone from 4 yards. Then taking advantage of a Fredonia fumble deep in their own territory, Page would hit paydirt again, this time from 17 yards out to increase the lead to 28-20.

A failed Humboldt 2-point conversion left the game within striking distance, giving the Yellowjackets just one more try to tie the game. With 1:49 remaining, Fredonia would almost make good on that chance, putting Dutton in the endzone for his second touchdown of the day. Unfortunately, Dinkel's last-chance effort to pick up the 2-point conversion fell just a couple yards short, allowing Humboldt to eventually recover an onside and run out the clock.

Page finished the day with all four Humboldt touchdowns, while Dinkel and Dutton split Fredonia's four scores. The Yellowjackets, now 0-2, will feature in our next Game of the Week as well, remaining at home to host Neodesha. The Bluestreaks dropped their Week 2 contest to Caney. Next Friday's game can be heard on 690AM, KGGF.
