CCC Upsets Number One Hutch

Coffeyville Community College pulls off the upset of the number one team in the nation and the defending national champions. The Red Ravens beat Hutchinson 17-10 in the first game of the season in large part due to an outstanding performance from their defense.

It was a rough start to the game for CCC as starting QB Will Bohn fumbled the football that was returned for a touchdown, but that would end up being the only trip to the endzone for the Blue Dragons. CCC would eventually make the switch at QB to division one transfer from Louisiana Tech Jakson Thomson, who would start to find some momentum with the Red Ravens offense.

Hutch held onto their 7-0 lead for most of the first half but with just under five minutes left in the second quarter, CCC added their first points of the game with a field goal from Forrest Taylor. With the first half coming to an end CCC cut the Hutch lead to 1 with another FG from Taylor, but a roughing the kicker penalty would give the Ravens a first down and 8.8 seconds to try and take the lead. Thomson would seize the second chance at a touchdown finding Cortarious Wilson, with a back-shoulder fade, in the endzone for the lead and what would be the go-ahead TD.

The Coffeyville defense and special teams continued their excellent play into the second half blocking a punt in the third quarter and recovering in the endzone. Hutch was able to add three points early in the 4th, but the Ravens defense never allowed them into the endzone securing the victory. CCC's defense and special teams were the stars of the game forcing 8 turnovers including five fumbles, two interceptions and the blocked punt.

It's a 1-0 start to the season with a high likely hood of being ranked when the next poll comes out this week. CCC is back at home next week taking on 0-1 Dodge City.
