Erie Defeats Cherryvale in Marathon Contest

Erie and Cherryvale took to the field at 7 pm Friday, kicking off the 2021 high school football season. Nearly four-and-a-half hours later, it would be the Red Devils who came out on top, 16-15.

Cherryvale struck first, with new head coach Robert Henderson reaching into his bag of tricks midway through the first quarter. Running back Jackson Knight hit the senior receiver, Briggs Adkison, in stride for the 17-yard touchdown pass. The second quarter would see Erie punch back. Cayce Welch broke through the middle of the line on fourth down, turning what should have been only a couple of yards into a 25-yard score. The Red Devils led at the break, 8-7.

After halftime, things would prove to be a little wacky. Lightning was spotted in the area, forcing a 30-minute weather delay. The teams eventually returned to the field and played the first 4 minutes of the third quarter. However, another lightning strike would again send the teams back to the locker room. After another 30 minutes had passed, another restart was attempted, with another four minutes passing by on the clock. A third lightning strike, unfortunately, would force a third and final 30-minute weather delay.

As the teams finally got going once again, finally finishing the third quarter after nearly 2 hours, the lights at Erie's stadium automatically shut off, forcing another 10-minute delay. That would be the final pause of the action.

After getting underway once again, Erie held onto its lead with a couple of redzone stands. However, with Cherryvale's offense pushing, and Erie's sputtering, it seemed as if it'd be only a matter of time before the Chargers found their way back on top. That would finally come from a 15-yard touchdown run from Trevin Elam, putting Cherryvale ahead 15-8.

The lead would only last for a minute and a half. Erie quarterback Garrett Ruark took matters into his own hands, rushing up the left sideline for a 50-yard touchdown, the longest play for either team in the game. Ruark would go the opposite direction to convert the two point conversion. The senior would then secure an interception on the defensive side of the ball, locking things up for the Red Devils.

Erie improves to 1-0 on the season, while Henderson and Cherryvale start their 2021 season at 0-1. Game of the Week will be heading to Fredonia for Week 2, as the Yellowjackets host the Humboldt Cubs. Pregame will start at 6:30, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm.
