Red Ravens Fall in Season Finale

It was a tale of two halves for the Coffeyville Community College offense as the Ravens fell to the Independence Pirates 19-16 in the season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon.

The ICC offense wasted no time getting on the board as they marched 61 yards down the field in just over three minutes to put ICC on top but due to a blocked extra point they only led 6-0. After that score, both offenses went stone-cold as ICC was only able to tack on a pair of field goals to go into the halftime break with a 12-0 lead.

The CCC offense, which has only generated three first downs and 59 yards of total offense at the half, came alive in the second half. After forcing ICC to punt, CCC took the ball down the field in just over two minutes punctuated by a 51-yard sprint down the right side by running back Courtney Jackson to pull the Ravens within five points. After a 29-yard field goal by Skyler Seagraves that drew the margin to two points, ICC quarterback Brock Domann was hit hard and fumbled the football deep in his own territory and Jhaylan Shuler scooped the ball up and ran it into the end zone to give the Ravens their first lead of the afternoon 16-12 with 5:57 remaining in the game.

ICC would take the lead for good only 56 seconds later as running back Pat Bowen raced 57 yards untouched down the left side to arrange the final margin. The Ravens were going to attempt a field goal to send the game into overtime but CCC quarterback Nick Arvay was sacked and the special teams were unable to get onto the field quick enough for the attempt.

Star Thomas led all CCC rushers with 90 yards on 7 carries while Cortarious Wilson hauled in 5 catches for 38 yards. CCC finishes the spring season with a 3-3 record while ICC improved to 5-2. The NJCAA will return to a fall football season beginning in September.
