Coffeyville Dropped by Hutchinson in Football Season Opener

The Coffeyville Red Ravens hung around for one quarter before being dropped by the Hutchinson Blue Dragons by a score of 33-10 Friday night.

Hutchinson got the scoring started quickly by scoring on a 5 play, 60-yard drive that only took just over two minutes off the clock that was capped by a 30-yard scamper by quarterback C.J. Ogbonna. Coffeyville looked to answer the touchdown by taking the ball all the way to the Blue Dragon 2-yard line on the ensuing possession before Raven quarterback Kolbe Lange was dropped for an 11-yard sack and the Ravens had to settle for a Skyler Seagraves field goal to make the score 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Hutchinson began the second quarter with a bang as Tye Edwards capped off a 7-play drive with a plunge over the right side that extended the lead to 13-3 after the extra point attempt was muffed. After another Hutchinson field-goal, Coffeyville defensive back Zahquan Frazier pick off an overthrown pass and returned it into Hutchinson territory. The ensuing Raven drive was shut down with a four and out with 1:31 remaining in the first half.  Hutch quickly marched down the field to set up Alfonso Deleon's second field goal of the night as time ran out on the first half to give the Dragons a 19-3 heading into the halftime period.

After a weather delay of nearly an hour, Hutchinson started the third quarter quickly as Ogbanna engineered a 6-play drive capped off with a 35 pass to Ivan Thomas to make the score 26-3.  Coffeyville would strike back with a 20-yard run from running back Star Thomas that bought the Ravens within 16 but they would not get any close than that as Hutch tacked on a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to arrange the final margin.

James Meeks like all Raven rushers with 54 yards on 8 carries while Cryce Childress hauled in 6 passes for 43 yards. Hutchinson was led by Tye Edwards who had 83 yards rushing on 13 carried with a touchdown.

The Ravens remain on the road next week at the take on Dodge City at 1 pm.  You can listen to the game on 98.1 KUSN. Jared Sleppy and Kyle Hey will be on the call.
