Both Coffeyville teams cruised to victory Saturday, with the women defeating Allen County 61-38 and the men doing the same at 91-59.
The Coffeyville women came into Saturday holding a 3-game winning streak, and with Allen County entering the contest at 1-11, it seemed as if the Ravens would take home a victory as long as they didn't check out. That would prove to be true, as Coffeyville opened the game on a 19-3 run. Although Allen would find the mark quite often from outside the arc, the scoring just wouldn't come quick enough for the Red Devils to keep up with Coffeyville.
After the game, head coach Tony Turner addressed the depth of the his squad's bench. Simpson led all Coffeyville scorers with 16. Amiya Josey joined her in double digits with 10. The Red Raven women improve to 7-2 on the season and 6-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.
The men's game, as we've come to expect from the Red Ravens this season, was very close for the first 20 minutes. The Red Devil men were hyped for the game, and played into Coffeyville's always-stout defense quite aggressively. Despite the extra aggression, the Red Raven defense would hold firm though, only allowing 33 first half points. Coffeyville led by 3 at the half, 36-33. However, things wouldn't stay close for long. Coffeyville would slowly dismantle the Allen County defense, making shots that they hadn't in the first half and playing with renewed vigor on defense. A long Coffeyville run was eventually capped by this Love Bettis three-pointer, which gave the Red Ravens a 21-point lead. The lead would continue to grow, with the game eventually coming to a close as Coffeyville picked up its biggest lead of the night at 31 points.
Head coach Jay Herkelman said he wasn't too worried about the slow start, as he knows teams will always be fired up to face a tough opponent. The #2-ranked Red Ravens now sit at 12-0, and 10-0 in conference play. Bettis led all Coffeyville scorers with 15, but was joined by four other players (Larry White, Kevaughn Ellis, Tylor Perry, and Bostyn Holt) in double digits.
The Red Ravens now await a much anticipated matchup with Cowley County on Saturday. The women will tip-off at 5 pm, with the men to follow.
