Long Trip Results in Two Wins for Coffeyville

Coffeyville continued its winning ways Saturday, with the women defeating Dodge City 62-58 and the men doing the same 65-58.

Without leading scorer Faith Simpson in the lineup due to injury, and fellow starter Dariauna Carter also out of Saturday's contest, the Red Raven women had plenty of questions to answer at the outset of the game. Devin Wright, getting her first start of the season, would answer many of those questions. Wright played aggressive underneath, and recorded several points early. However, Coffeyville would still find other buckets hard to come by, and trailed at the half, 34-28. They would never truly find themselves out of the game, though, and the second half would be just as close. The Ravens trailed by only 5 entering the fourth quarter. Over the course of the final 10 minutes, Coffeyville would claw its way back into striking distance, trailing 58-57 with 30 seconds remaining.

After an inbounds pass was stolen away by Coffeyville, the Ravens found themselves with one chance to put themselves back on top. With 15 seconds left to play, it would be Martina Aeschliman who came up with a huge three-pointer to give Coffeyville the lead. Dodge City would have a chance to win the game at 60-58, but a made three-pointer was waved off as the Conqs had too many players on the floor. A technical foul was issued, and Paige Scott sank a free throw to put Coffeyville up three. Aeschliman would add a free throw herself with just a few seconds ago to give the final score of 62-58. Wright led all Coffeyville scorers with 18. Makenzie Davis, who was also celebrating her birthday Saturday, recorded 14 for her season high. The women improve to 5-2 on the season, and improve to 4-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.

With the women's game in the books, it was time for one of the most anticipated conference matchups of the night, with the third-ranked Coffeyville taking on the 22nd-ranked Dodge City. Despite a hot first couple of minutes from the Ravens, they would soon go absolutely cold for much of the first half, shooting less than 30 percent from the field and going just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. This would be in spite of often-times good shot selection, as Coffeyville's usual scorers just could not seem to get it going. It wasn't all bad for the men, however, as the typically stout Coffeyville defense would keep them in the game at 29-26 heading into the break.

The scoring would pick up just a tad in the second half, with Coffeyville relaxing and continuing to make good decisions. Dodge City would build a lead as big as 9, but much like the women before them, the Ravens continued to stay close enough that a comeback was possible at any moment. Finally, the Ravens were rewarded. Tylor Perry, who had gone just 1-of-7 from deep in the first half, would soon find his stroke, including this three-pointer to beat the shot clock. Coffeyville ended the game on an 11-1 run, giving them the 7-point victory at 65-58. Perry led all scorers, finishing 5-12 from three-point land and recording 25 points. Bostyn Holt also reached double digits, scoring 12. The men have now reached 10-0 on the season, and 8-0 in conference play.

Next up, the men will travel solo to Chanute to meet the Neosho County Panthers on Monday. Tip-off will be at 5:30 pm, with pregame starting at 5:15 on US98.1, KUSN.
