Coffeyville Sweeps Colby Heading into Road Trip

Coffeyville defended its home court Thursday, with the women defeating Colby 49-47 and the men doing the same at 90-51.

The path wasn't necessarily easy for the Coffeyville women. The team had been in quarantine and hadn't been able to necessarily practice in the days leading up to the game. The team was also without key pieces Dariauna Carter and Amiya Josey for Thursday's matchup. Regardless, the Red Ravens fought hard, forcing several turnovers early on that helped the team build a 12-8 after one quarter. Although that lead would eventually be lost on a 7-0 run by the Trojans, Coffeyville would claw back to take a 6-point lead at 24-18 before the half. The low-scoring nature of the contest carried into the second half, with both teams trading baskets. The game would come down to the final few possessions. With Coffeyville leading by one, they found the stop they needed.

After the game, head coach Tony Turner spoke about the team's recent injury troubles. Faith Simpson finished with a double-double at 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paige Scott, in her first start for Coffeyville, also got into double digits with 10. The women improve to 4-2 and 3-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.

The men found their road to victory to be much easier. The third-ranked Red Ravens could not be accused of looking forward to Saturday's marquee matchup with Dodge City. The team jumped out to an early double-digit lead, capped off by this Hayden Brittingham slam. Coffeyville took a 14-point lead into the locker room, and really never looked back. The lead just continued to increase, led by yet another balanced scoring effort. Eleven different Ravens found their way into the scoring books, including Brittingham, who led all Coffeyville scorers with 14. Kevaughn Ellis and Jalen Smith also found their stride, picking up 12 each. Tylor Perry added another 11-point game to further assist the effort. The Ravens eventually cruised to the 39-point victory, 90-51, to improve to 9-0 on the season and 7-0 in the conference.

With Colby in the past, both teams now look toward a long road trip to Dodge City. The women will tip off at 1 pm, with the men to follow. You can follow all the action on US98.1, KUSN.
