FKHS Spring Senior Spotlight: Golf

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, many high school students saw their athletic careers come to an abrupt end. However, the family of stations here at KGGF would like to honor Field Kindley spring athletes through interviews with the coaches who have worked with them closely over several years.

Today, we look at the boy's golf team, coached by Mike Peck. The team had three seniors this year, and all of them were looking at possibly qualifying for state competition this year.

Our first senior is Jayden Crawford, a would-be two-year letterman who came to Peck from the baseball team. Peck said the transition to golf came easy for Crawford because of his experience on the baseball team. Crawford was hitting about 115 strokes after his first year out, but he was only improving with time. After just three weeks of practice this year, he had already taken 10 strokes off his average score. Peck said he thought he was only going to get better as the season moved along.

Another senior was Aaron Watson, who would have been entering his third year on the team. When Watson came out for the team, he had never played golf before. Peck was expecting him to get under 100 strokes this year. Watson was a hard worker who was a natural fit for the team, despite not thinking he'd be any good to begin with.

And finally, Owen Carr had probably the loftiest expectations from Peck coming into the season for any of the seniors. Peck said he wanted Carr to score in the low 80s this season, something he has been able to do in the past. A three-year letterman, he had placed 29th in all-SEK competition in 2018, and improved his position to 19th in 2019. Peck said he expected Carr to finally reach that all-SEK mark, and qualify for state as an individual.

Peck said the goal for the team this season was to send a whole team to state, as well as a few individuals. Combined with one of the talented freshman class, the three would have likely been members of that potential state-qualifying team.

We will continue our coverage of the spring sport seniors at FKHS later this week. Next, we will take a look at the track and field team, coached by Jeremy Neuenschwander.
