FKHS Spring Senior Spotlight: Tennis

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, many high school students saw their athletic careers come to an abrupt end. However, the family of stations here at KGGF would like to honor Field Kindley spring athletes through interviews with the coaches who have worked with them closely over several years.

Our next sport to be covered is the boys' tennis team, coached by Curtis Chapman. A program on the rise, Coach Chapman saw 11 boys come out for the team this season, including five seniors and one exchange student.

Starting off, our first senior to be recognized is Noah Eytcheson. Set to be the team captain for the season, Eytcheson was the only member of the tennis team for the past two seasons. Chapman said leadership came naturally to him. He also spoke highly of his personality off the court.

Another senior coming out for the team this year had never played tennis before. Clifford Mitchell, described by Chapman as a good athlete, was a part of the wrestling team. Despite his inexperience, Chapman was confident his work ethic would bring him success.

Also coming out for his first year of tennis was Dylan Moses. Moses was involved with theater, but still showed signs of leadership in the small amount of time he spent with the team. Chapman said one of the biggest disappointments about the canceled season was not being able to watch the first-year players improve through competition.

Our next senior is Eli Bell, who impressed Chapman with his enthusiasm. He said that even after he'd leave practice, Bell and the rest of the boys would stay and work on their game.

Drew Cormier was another first-year player for the team, but was a quick learner and another natural athlete. He fit in easily and naturally with the rest of the team.

And finally, a special case for the tennis team this season was junior Malte Ditz, an exchange student from Germany. He would've had only one year to play with the rest of the team, but Chapman said he was about as talented as they come. Ditz also taught Chapman a little bit about the culture differences between Germany and the United States.

Coach Chapman said that the timing of the season's cancellation was unfortunate, as they had been practicing for two weeks and were ready to play against new competition. However, the season was officially canceled the day before their first meet. But the future bodes well for the team. Other than the five seniors and Ditz, four freshman and one junior came out for the team this year, and Chapman said he hopes to see them again next year to continue building the program.

We'll continue to honor the various spring sports seniors throughout the rest of this week. Tomorrow, we will be honoring Coach Mike Peck and the golf seniors.
