Coffeyville Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Highland

Coffeyville bounced back from a disappointing 19-7 loss against Highland Community College to split the doubleheader with an 8-3 victory on Saturday.

The Red Ravens actually did hold the lead at the beginning of the first game, picking up four runs in the bottom of the second. However, with starting pitcher Chat Hayes on a strict pitch count and needing to come out of the game in the fifth inning, the bullpen would have to try to hold on the lead. Unfortunately for Coffeyville, Highland would pick up the momentum they needed, ripping off a massive 11-run sixth inning that blew the game open. The Scotties would add three more in the seventh, and although Trey McClelland would blast a home run over the left field fence in the bottom half of the inning, it would ultimately mean nothing in the final scoreline.

Coffeyville turned things around for the second game. Zack Cushing, making his first start since joining the starting rotation, was absolutely dominant on the mound. Cushing recorded 12 strikeouts in just under six innings of work, and put Coffeyville in a good position to hold onto the lead the rest of the way. The bullpen would also hold a lot stronger this time around as well, with Alex Galvez recording three strikeouts for himself and Tayler Mahoney racking up four as well. Offensively, Coffeyville saw good production from Quinton Carlberg, who went 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases.

Following the split doubleheader, Coffeyville sits at 6-11 on the season and 2-2 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Red Ravens will stay at home for their next matchup against Neosho County on Thursday. First pitch for the first game will start at 1 pm, with Connor Harbit on the call on Star 98.9, KQQF.
