Caney Survives Wichita Trinity to Advance in Sub State

The Caney Valley Bullpups live to fight another day as they held off Wichita Trinity Academy on Monday night 68-64 to advance to the Semi-Finals in their Class 3A Sub State.

Both teams saw leads evaporate at some point in the game as the Knights (8-13) held an early eight point lead in the first quarter only to see it gone in a matter of minutes as Caney Valley tied it up quickly but the Knights held a 23-22 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Defense was the story in the second quarter as both teams struggled to find point but it was Caney Valley (16-5) who picked up a buzzer beater basket at the end of the half to lead 31-30. There was just 16 combined points in the second quarter compared to 45 combined points in the first quarter.

The Bullpups built up their largest lead in the third quarter as they opened the frame on a 10-0 run to build an 11 point lead. Their largest lead got to 12 at one point but the Knights would not go away and at multiple times cut the deficit to four. Caney Valley would head to the fourth quarter with a 52-45 advantage.

Both teams exchanged buckets early in the fourth with the lead for Caney Valley going back and forth between seven and nine points. The Knights got back to within five but free throw shooting turned out to be a big difference in this game.

Wichita Trinity Academy did not shoot a single free throw in the game while Caney Valley used free throws towards the end of the game to hold off the Knights as the Bullpups connected on 14 of 21 at the line.

The win for Caney Valley extends their winning streak to 10.

The Semi-Final match up will take place on Thursday night at Cheney High School against 17-3 Wichita Collegiate who defeated Kingman 60-28 on Monday night.
