Coffeyville Sends Both Teams to Quarterfinals

The Coffeyville women held off a very aggressive Garden City squad while the men cruised to an easy victory over Dodge City in the first round of the Region VI Division I basketball tournament.

The women's game was close throughout, with the 14th-seeded Bronc Busters looking to play spoiler. With Faith Simpson picking up two fouls in the first quarter, Coffeyville struggled at times to break away from the aggressive play that Garden City showed the entire night. While Coffeyville trailed by four at the half, the Red Ravens were able to jump back out in front in third quarter to set up what would be the most interesting moment of the night. With Coffeyville leading by 4 and just two minutes to play, Ania Markowska got into a verbal altercation with Garden City's Jaleah Bellany following a Bronc Busters foul. Bellany received a technical from the ref to go along with the original foul. While Markowska didn't receive a technical for her side of the incident, Garden City's Donetria McGee also received a technical after sharing words with a referee. That would send Kailyn Lay to the free throw line for multiple opportunites, with Lay making good on those opportunities and putting the game away for the Red Ravens. Final score was 79-65, with Simpson recording a season-high 37 points after going 17-22 from the field. Markowska was the iron woman of the game, playing all 40 minutes.

The men's game was certainly not as close, with the Coffeyville men jumping on Dodge City early. Coffeyville was dominant on both sides of the ball, jumping out to a 26-point lead before the half. The Red Ravens could also not be stopped on the offensive glass, picking up 27 rebounds and almost outpacing their defensive rebounding effort. The team shot 41 percent from the field and also made 18 of 20 free throws, which was instrumental in pulling away with the intial lead. With the lead firmly squared away, Coffeyville would let the Conquistadors get to within 22 in the second-half before eventually pulling away once again for the 36-point victory, 97-63. All ten Red Ravens scored during the course of the game, with Meikkel Murray leading all Coffeyville scorers with 19 and being joined in double-digits by Manny Crump (17), Larry White (13), Tony Hutson (11), and Bostyn Holt (10).

Both Coffeyville teams will take on Barton County in the quarterfinals, which will be played at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. The women will play at 5 p.m. on Saturday while the men will take the floor at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast on US98, KUSN.
