The Coffeyville women's basketball team walked away with a big victory on Saturday, defeated a talented Pratt Community College squad 75-61. However, the men would fall later in the night, being defeated by the Beavers 59-55.
The women's contest was blow-for-blow the entire first half and the beginning of the second half, with neither team able to get a lead bigger than 5 points. The game was also marked by low scoring, with the Red Ravens heading into the locker room trailing by 2 at 28-26. However, Coffeyville would utilize the skillset of recent addition Faith Simpson, whose post play quickly helped the Lady Ravens build up a much bigger lead than they had been able to gather before. Simpson would finish the game with 19 points and 7 rebounds, leading all scorers in the game. Kailyn Lay would also approach double-double territory, picking up 10 points and 8 assists. Other double-digit scorers included Alana Kramer (16) and Christina Deng (11). The women improve to 12-2 on the season and 2-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.
The men would not be so lucky. Despite the men's contest being very much like the women's game, with frequent lead changes and and overall competitive setting, Coffeyville found themselves unable to pull away. They would lead by as much as 9 at different points of the game, but could not keep the lead for very long as the Beavers would shoot themselves back into the game. Despite the loss, Meikkel Murray looked very good all night, finishing with 24 points and several key 3-pointers that kept the Red Ravens in the game. He would be the only double-digit scorer for Coffeyville. The men fall to 9-5 on the season and 1-3 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Both the men and the women will be in action next Wednesday for one last matchup before the holiday break. The Red Ravens will travel to Garden City to take on the Bronc Busters of Garden City Community College. Those games, as always, will be broadcast on US 98.1, KUSN.
