Independence prepares to honor veterans with a full day of activities Saturday.
The 10th annual Veterans Day of Honor celebration begins with a veterans appreciation breakfast from 7:00am to 10:00am at VFW Post 1186. Independence Chamber of Commerce President Lisa Wilson says the morning also includes a tribute at Veterans Freedom Square in Riverside Park.
A Fallen Soldier Cross presentation follows the tribute, along with a Veterans Honor Walk on the Verdigris Vista Trail. Other activities include a downtown patriotic rock hunt, a free military exhibit at the Independence Historical Museum and a free community hot dog lunch from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the VFW. The Heroes and Hot Rods Car Show runs from 12:00pm to 1:30pm at AutoZone, ahead of the downtown parade at 2:00pm. Wilson says the parade’s route reflects the history of Memorial Hall.
Businesses, organizations, families and individuals can register for the parade through the Events section at indkschamber.org or call (620)331-1890. Saturday’s activities conclude with a Veterans Day street dance from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the VFW. The celebration continues Wednesday, November 11th with the Mid-Continent Band’s Veterans Day concert at 7:00pm at Independence High School.
