The City of Independence is reminding residents about changes to its recycling program.

Due to a lack of available markets, the city can no longer accept plastic or glass for recycling. Accepted items include aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, junk mail, office paper, slick-coated boxes, household batteries, and car and lawn mower batteries. Recyclables can be dropped off Fridays and the first Saturday of each month, from 8 until noon, at the Sanitation Yard at 125 South 21st Street. Appliances, furniture and other bulky items also are accepted during those hours. Brush, leaves and limbs can be taken to the City Brush Yard, located one-half mile south of College Avenue, 3840 CR 4100, Thursdays through Saturdays, from 8 until noon.

For hazardous waste disposal, residents should contact the Montgomery County Hazardous Waste Department at 620-331-4139.
