Independence City Commission to Meet Tonight

The Independence City Commission will meet tonight and continue its efforts to address the issue dangerous and unsafe properties.

At tonight's meeting, commissioners will conduct public hearings on ten properties deemed dangerous and unsafe. The hearings will determine whether the property owner is willing to take steps to improve the structure or if the city will proceed with the condemnation process.

In other business, commissioners will consider a Memo of Understanding with Labette Health for ambulance service. Labette Health is asking Independence to join a regional ambulance service for long-distance transfers between medical facilities. This would provide a backup for long-distance patient transfers so local ambulances remain available for emergencies in Independence.

Commissioners will also consider rezoning a tract of land in the 200 block of South 10th Street from residential to commercial along with the expected approval of conditional use permits for two short-term rentals.

Tonight's Independence City Commission meeting begins at 5:30 in the Commission room at City Hall. The public is invited to attend in person or to view the meeting online via the City's website.
