In the wake of a devastating home fire that claimed lives on September 11th, the community of Independence is coming together to install free smoke alarms in their community.
The Red Cross and the Independence Fire/EMS Department are seeking volunteers for installation as well as taking registrations for homes to have smoke alarms installed.
Since 2014, the Sound the Alarm program has installed over 3 million smoke alarms. Volunteers don’t need installation experience, only the willingness to help. During home visits, the volunteers will also educate residents on fire safety and share preparedness information.
To apply for your free smoke alarm, call the Independence Fire/EMS Department at 620-332-2537. There will also be an open call for community members to receive free smoke alarms or become a volunteer this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
