The debate continues over the possible construction of data centers in Montgomery County.
This week’s county commission meeting saw a 90-minute public comment section in which most of those present spoke against data center construction. Residents voiced their concerns about water and electricity demands of such facilities in addition to potential health concerns.
Commissioner Phil Clubine says he is still in favor of a county-wide moratorium.
Clubine made the motion for a moratorium at a past meeting. That motion died on the floor without a second from either of the other commissioners. Commission Chair Mike Cordray says he is cautious about telling others how they can use their own property.
Only one speaker was in favor of data centers. The man stated that he was an electrician who had worked on data centers and was confident in their operations, saying he had not encountered any issues while working in the facilities. His comments prompted a tense exchange with others in the audience.
Later at the Cherryvale City Council meeting, it was standing-room only as members of the public packed the room, although there were no public comments were allowed at this meeting. There will be time for comments at the city's next meeting on the 19th.
