Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence is welcoming its latest arrival.

 

The Zoo has recently received a one-year-old male bobcat named Scooter. Scooter comes to Independence from a wildlife rehabilitator in Parsons. Scooter is currently under quarantine to ensure he is healthy and to allow him to adjust to his new home. While he settles in, zoo staff will be making renovations to the previous cougar exhibit after the passing of Tink the cougar earlier this month. When the renovations and Scooter's quarantine period are complete, he will be available for viewing by park goers.

 

Bobcats are native to North America and can be found in forests, swamps, and deserts. They are known for their short, “bobbed" tail, spotted coat, and tufted ears. In the wild, bobcats live an average of 7-10 years, but can they live to be around 15-18 years old in human care.
