A Coffeyville man is under arrest following an ATV pursuit in Independence.
43-year-old William Joseph Schiler was taken into custody on July 17th after leading police on a chase through the rural parts of Montgomery County. The pursuit began around 8:30 that evening when Independence Police officers attempted a traffic stop on an individual driving an ATV on city streets near Laurel and 21st Street. The driver refused to stop and fled the scene, striking an I-P-D patrol vehicle as he fled. The pursuit was joined by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. K-H-P eventually deployed a drone to locate the suspect after he fled into a wooded area.
Schiler faces multiple charges including Fleeing and Eluding and Aggravated Assault and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Deadly Weapon. His bond was set at $50,000 with electronic monitoring.
