The Montgomery County Treasurer's Office is reminding residents that Friday is the deadline for delinquent property taxes.
As of last Friday, the county reports 4,256 real estate parcels in Montgomery County that remain delinquent, representing more than $3.4 million in unpaid property taxes. Of the four major cities in the county, Coffeyville has the most delinquent properties with 1,443, followed by Independence with 1.028, Cherryvale with 419 and Caney with 301. The communities of Elk City, Dearing, Tyro, Liberty and Havana combined have 232 delinquent properties, with the rest located in the unincorporated areas of the County.
According to Kansas law, those who do not pay their taxes by Friday will be included on the County's official published list of delinquent taxes. Appearing on this list does not mean a property has been sold or foreclosed. However, properties with taxes that remain unpaid may eventually become subject to a tax foreclosure action as prescribed by state law.
The Montgomery County Treasurer's Office encourages property owners with delinquent taxes to act before the July 31 deadline. Paying delinquent taxes prior to publication can help avoid additional interest, penalties, court costs, and other expenses that may arise if the delinquency continues.
