The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is called in to investigate the death of an inmate at the Allen County Jail in Iola.

On Tuesday July 21, 2026, authorities at the Allen County Jail found a 29-year-old inmate in medical distress in his cell. The inmate was unresponsive at the time and life-saving measures were taken by staff until EMS arrived at the jail. The inmate was taken to Allen County Regional Hospital and later transferred to St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. The man died at the hospital the following afternoon.

The inmate was being held in the Allen County Jail on alleged drug charges and an ICE detainer.
