Hot summer weather can increase the risk of blue-green algae in ponds, lakes, and other slow-moving bodies of water. Residents need to be cautious around water that appears bright green, blue-green, or has a thick, paint-like scum on the surface.
Wildcat Extension Agent Adaven Rohling says Blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins that are dangerous to people, livestock, pets, and wildlife.
If you suspect blue-green algae is present, keep people and animals out of the water and provide livestock and pets with a clean source of drinking water.
