City of Independence Gets Results of 2025 Audit

The Independence City Commission hears the results of audit of the City’s 2025 finances.

At last week’s regular commission meeting, Sean Gordon with the Lawrence-based firm Gordon CPA presented the firm’s findings. Gordon says the numbers look good.

The purpose of the yearly city financial audit is to provide independent, objective assurance that public funds are managed properly. It verifies that the city's financial statements are accurate, checks that expenditures comply with legal regulations, and identifies potential weaknesses in internal controls to protect public assets. Gordon says the City ended 2025 with an adequate amount of funds on hand.

In other business, commissioners approved an ordinance that will allow the City to disconnect utility service from structures that have been condemned. Commissioners also approved a measure that would move the center line on Oak Street between 13th and 21st Streets, just west of the Independence High School. The move would allow for parking on the south side of the street and will occur if the measure is also approved by Montgomery County.
