One person is dead after a weekend drowning incident at a reservoir in western Kansas.
According to the Hodgeman County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to Horsethief Reservoir, located about twenty miles north of Dodge City on Saturday afternoon. Just after 3pm, a possible drowning was reported at the reservoir’s swimming area. Additional units from neighboring Ford County, as well as those from the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Garden City and Jetmore Fire Departments were called in to assist when the operation changed from rescue to recovery.
The victim was located and removed from the water around 5pm Saturday night. Hodgeman County Sheriff Jared Walker stated that the victim’s identity has not yet been released pending the notification of the next of kin.
