A dog dies in an Independence house fire.
The Independence Fire Department responded to the 400 block of South 10th Street just before 7:00pm yesterday for a reported structure fire. Fire Chief Aaron Cook arrived to find moderate smoke coming from a duplex and requested a second alarm, bringing the Independence Rural Fire Department to assist with suppression efforts.
Firefighters were advised that a dog was inside the residence. During an interior attack, crews located the dog and immediately began CPR using the department's K-9 oxygen mask. Despite their efforts, the dog could not be revived. The fire remains under investigation. No firefighters were injured, but the residence sustained significant fire and smoke damage.
