The Vinita Fire Department is reminding residents to avoid driving across flooded roadways after responding to multiple swift water rescues.
Firefighters safely rescued drivers from two separate small SUVs that became stranded while attempting to cross heavily flooded county roads. VFD says many drivers overestimate their vehicle's capabilities or underestimate the depth and force of floodwaters. Even shallow, moving water can sweep away cars, trucks and SUVs.
Motorists are urged to never drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads. Emergency officials continue to stress the message "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
