Pittsburg Police are warning residents of a recent increase in vehicles thefts, especially for owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles.
The recent incidents have primarily occurred during the overnight and early morning hours. Detectives and patrol officers are actively investigating these incidents and have increased proactive patrols citywide to address these concerns. Investigators believe many of the incidents may be connected to a small group of individuals and law enforcement continues to investigate the crimes.
Authorities advise that residents take steps to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim and say anyone who suspects their vehicle has been tampered with or stolen to report it immediately as prompt reporting can assist officers in identifying suspects and recovering stolen vehicles.
Here are several steps vehicle owners can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim:
• Park vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible
• Use steering wheel locks or other anti-theft devices
• Lock vehicle doors and close windows, even when parked at home
• Remove valuables from plain view
• Utilize alarms, immobilizers, GPS tracking devices, or other security features
• Never leave a vehicle running and unattended
• Do not leave keys or key fobs inside vehicles
• Install security cameras capable of recording and storing video footage of parked vehicles
• Report suspicious activity immediately, including individuals checking vehicle door handles or lingering around parked vehicles during overnight hours
The Pittsburg Police Department urges Kia and Hyundai owners to review the important safety information and security updates provided by the manufacturers:
