Independence City Commission Approves Bid for Demolition of 21 Condemned Houses

The Independence City Commission approves the demolition of twenty-one structures in the City deemed dangerous and unsafe,

At Thursday's meeting, Assistant City Manager David Cowan presented the commission with a bid of just over $139,000 from Mega, LLC, of Independence, for the demolition of the condemned houses. Mayor Dean Hayse says the demolition represents the culmination of a lengthy legal process and a great deal of work by city staff.

Three other structures were excluded from the list due to pending repairs or planned demolition by the property owner.

The City Commission also held five Public Hearings on other structures deemed dangerous and unsafe. The hearings on three of those properties were adjourned until later this summer after the owners spoke at the meeting and updated the City on the progress of their repairs. The remaining two houses were given 30 days to begin improvements before condemnation will be addressed.

The City has plans to continue its efforts to remove derelict houses from neighborhoods.
