Governor Kelly Joins Coalition Urging Court to Uphold Block of National Guard Deployment in Washington D.C

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly becomes part of a multistate coalition to urge the courts to uphold a block of the National Guard Deployment in Washington D.C.

Kelly joins twenty-three Attorneys General and the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania in filing an amicus brief in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, urging the court to deny the Trump administration’s appeal and uphold a lower court’s ruling blocking the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.

Governor Kelly and the coalition argue that the deployment undermines the sovereignty of states and local jurisdictions and threatens the foundational principle of American democracy that the military must remain under civilian control. President Ttrump continues the deployment in Washington, D.C. and has stated his intent to send troops to more American cities.

The coalition urges the D.C. Circuit to uphold the district court’s ruling and affirm that the President does not have the authority to deploy the National Guard as a domestic police force.
