The Bourbon County Clerk files a lawsuit to block a recent effort to recall her over ballot errors in the November 2025 election.
Bourbon County Clerk Susan Walker has filed a lawsuit asking a judge to declare a recall petition against her legally invalid. The move also seeks to stop all signature collection and block any recall election collected to the effort. The recall petition began circulating earlier this month after incorrect ballots were issued for the USD 235 school board election last fall. After contacting the Kansas Secretary of State about the problem, new ballots were printed and mail-in voters were allowed to re-vote. However, some early voters were unable to cast votes in the election.
Walker's complaint alleges that the claims in the recall are too vague and that the petition was not formally approved before signatures were gathered.
In order to trigger a recall election, a petition must gather at least enough signatures to total 40% of the votes cast in the election. Organizers of the Walker recall would have until July 26th to gather the signatures required.
