Suspect Identified in Wichita Police Shooting

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation releases the identity of the suspect who was shot and killed by Wichita Police during a Saturday evening incident.

The K-B-I says 36-year-old Qiam Ahmadi was shot and killed around 7:30pm on Saturday (May 23) after firing at officers. The incident began earlier that afternoon when W-P-D officers responded to the scene near K-96 and Greenwich Road after multiple reports of an armed man causing a disturbance in the area. The suspect fired on officers several times before barricading himself in a tree near a residential area.

The WPD and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office’s joint SWAT team responded. Crisis negotiators, a helicopter, and drones were also deployed to help locate and monitor the armed man during the incident. At around 7:25 p.m., an armored tactical vehicle was used to safely approach the man, in order to provide him a communication device. According to police, the subject pointed his firearm toward officers who were on a platform of the tactical vehicle. One officer from WPD fired his weapon striking the man. The subject returned fire, and the same officer then fired multiple additional rounds.

Life-saving measures were attempted, and the man was transported to an area hospital. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
