A Coffeyville restaurant owner is indicted by a federal grand jury in Wichita.
39-year-old Salvador Bermudez-Herrera was indicted on one count of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien and one count of unlawful reentry after deportation. ICE is investigating the case. He was arrested in Coffeyville in late April following a traffic stop. According to that arrest record, Bermudez-Herrera was stopped for unlawful use of a turn signal and also had charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and illegal alien in possession of a firearm. The charges locally were dismissed without prejudice, which means Bermudez-Herrera could still be tried locally for them.
A charge of possessing a firearm as an undocumented immigrant carries a penalty of up to 15 years in federal prison, while unlawful reentry after deportation can bring up to two years or as much as 20 years if the person has prior felony convictions.
