Winter Wheat Ahead of Average

Winter wheat is not too far from harvest, well ahead of the five year average across the region.

That's according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, which reports that winter wheat headed is 93%, well ahead of 82% last year and the 5-year-average of 72%.

K-State Wildcat Extension District Crop Agent James Coover says the advanced timeline shouldn't be an issue.

Coover says condition in southeast Kansas is better than a lot of the state, as condition across Kansas is rated 58% poor or very poor.  Corn got off to a slower start, with 63% planted, behind 71% planted and 68% average. Coover says the weather had a lot to do with this.

Soybeans planted are also ahead of the average of 44% at 53%.  For more crop updates, tune into the KGGF Farm Show with Ron Hays every weekday at 6 a.m., 11:30 and 12:30 on The Mighty 690.
